New lease of life for Paignton community volunteerAFTAID donates mobility scooter to 82 year old pensioner |

London, 26 June 2007 – AFTAID (Aid for the Aged in Distress), the charity that provides the elderly with vital financial support, has given 82 year old community volunteer and former underground war worker Nancy Hanley increased mobility by providing her with an electrically powered scooter.
Mrs Hanley, who worked at an underground aircraft factory in Corsham, North Wiltshire, during the Second World War, has always played an active part in her community. But hip replacements and other joint problems began to cause her considerable pain resulting in mobility problems. Although walking for her is restricted to short distances she can still drive her car leaving her able to continue her volunteer work for Paignton charity, Bridge the Gap - transporting older people to hospital appointments and coffee mornings.
She said, “I had a hip operation over ten years ago, but over the last four years, with severe knee and ankle problems, I have found it more difficult to do any community work and the usually trouble-free trips to the local shop became an ordeal. I knew that I had to get myself mobile again so I looked into getting some help to buy a scooter.”
Mrs Hanley turned to the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) and, with the help of AFTAID, the organisations were able to provide her with an electric scooter to regain her mobility.
“For the first time, I can visit the pedestrianised parts of Paignton without worrying about parking the car and having to walk too far. I can get about in comfort,” she said.
